What to expect on a Lake Michigan cruise
1/5
A relaxed way to see Chicago without any of the rush
A lake cruise gives you time to enjoy the city without navigating traffic, crowds, or packed sidewalks. Families appreciate the open space and easy pace, while couples often choose sunset or dinner cruises for a more romantic outing. You can simply sit back and watch the city from the water.
Dinner on the water with skyline views
Some cruises turn the sightseeing trip into a full dining experience. Enjoy meals onboard as the boat glides along the shoreline. Large windows or open decks keep the skyline in view while you eat. It’s a popular option for celebrations, date nights, or visitors looking for a more intimate experience.
A quieter cruise focused on the scenery
Unlike many tours on the Chicago River, Lake Michigan cruises are less about narration and more about relaxed sightseeing. You’ll hear light music or casual commentary, creating a calm atmosphere where you can chat with friends, take photos, or simply watch the city glide by.
Choose between a thrilling ride or a laid-back cruise
Lake Michigan cruises come in different styles depending on how adventurous you feel. Speedboats race along the lakefront, offering quick turns, bursts of speed, and a more energetic ride. Larger sightseeing vessels move at a relaxed pace with spacious decks and plenty of seating for taking in the view.
Summer fireworks from the best seat in the city
During the summer months, cruises that depart around the fireworks schedule offer a front-row perspective of the show launched from Navy Pier. Watching fireworks from the lake means no crowds and an unobstructed view as the bursts light up the skyline behind them. It’s one of the most memorable ways to experience Chicago’s summer evenings.
Things to know before booking your Lake Michigan cruises
Guided vs non-guided tours: Most of your Lake Michigan cruises come with light narration and commentary.
The primary focus is on sightseeing, unlike the guided river architecture cruises.
The 90-min Chicago River and Lake Michigan Architecture Cruise is the only tour that includes a guide as well as sightseeing on Lake Michigan.
Boarding points: There are two main boarding points for your Lake Michigan cruises.
Navy Pier: Closer to Lake Michigan, it does not pass as many architectural landmarks along the Chicago River. The seasonal fireworks take place along the Navy Pier docks.
Michigan Avenue: Passes along the Chicago River before reaching the open waters of Lake Michigan, which means you will pass through more architectural sights along the way.
Accessibility features: Your cruise vessels are wheelchair accessible, with accessible ramps and restrooms available onboard.
The speedboat tour is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Keep in mind that ECVs and other motorized wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on your cruises.
Fireworks season: The Navy Pier fireworks take place on select dates during the week from May to October every year.
Dinner cruises on Lake Michigan offer an upgrade where you can view the fireworks along with your cruise during that time period.
Keep in mind that these are very popular experiences, and they tend to sell out weeks in advance. Booking at least 3-4 weeks before is highly recommended.
Onboard inclusions: The onboard bar is not included with your cruise tickets, but the drinks are available for purchase with a valid ID.
Tour route changes: Your Captain might change/alter your cruise route based on weather conditions or traffic to ensure the best possible experience.
Table reservations: Tables are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Although you can request an upgrade for a window table seat at the location on the Odyssey Lake Michigan Dinner Cruise .
Age requirements: Children under the age of 2 can join the cruises for free, as long as they have a prior reservation and are accompanied by a ticketed adult (does not apply for the speedboat tours).
Watch the skyline transform as the sun dips behind the city. The buildings reflect warm light first, then gradually glow as their lights turn on after dusk.

Stay within designated passenger areas: Restricted zones such as the captain’s deck, crew workspaces, and mechanical areas are off-limits for safety reasons. Stick to the marked seating decks and viewing areas.
Use railings and avoid leaning over the sides: The lake can have unexpected waves or wind gusts. Keep a safe distance from railings and avoid sitting or climbing on them while the boat is moving.
Children must be supervised at all times: Many cruises are family-friendly, but open decks and moving vessels require constant supervision. Children should remain seated or close to adults while walking around.
Choose your cruise based on the experience you want: Sightseeing vessels focus on skyline views and relaxed cruising, while speedboat tours offer fast rides and splashes. Dinner cruises prioritize dining and entertainment rather than extensive sightseeing narration.
Bring a light jacket even in summer: Temperatures on the lake are often cooler than downtown Chicago due to lake winds. Evening cruises can feel especially breezy once the sun goes down.
Book fireworks cruises well in advance: Fireworks sailings tied to the displays at Navy Pier sell out quickly during summer weekends. Booking at least 4 weeks in advance secures the dates you would like.
Pair a lake cruise with a river architecture tour earlier in the day: The skyline looks very different from the open lake compared to the close-up views along the Chicago River. Many visitors opt for both for a fuller perspective of the city.
Plan time to explore the pier before or after your cruise: Departures from Navy Pier make it easy to arrive early for lakefront views, restaurants, or a walk along the waterfront before boarding.

I took the 45-minute Chicago River Architecture Cruise and it was absolutely worth it. Even though it’s shorter than the classic tour, it still delivers amazing skyline views and covers the key architectural highlights along the river.
The guide was engaging and knowledgeable, giving just the right amount of history and fun facts without feeling rushed. The route is very scenic, and you get great views of iconic buildings like Marina City, the Wrigley Building, and the Tribune Tower.
It’s the perfect option if you’re short on time but still want a great introduction to Chicago’s architecture and riverfront. Fast, fun, and totally worth it. Highly recommend!

I was amazed by all the buildings and some insights about it. It was a great experience with my friends. The cruise was smooth and really safe. As an exchange teacher from Philippines here in New Mexico I can share it to my students and relatives to try it when they visit Chicago.

#The Odyssey was 10/10. Our waitress Nikki was 10/10 she gave the run down on everything on the menu. Drinks were good , the DJ played every kind of music for everybody to dance too. All around it was relaxing and the views were out of this world. Would I go back of course.
