Although the weather was very cold, the speaker was so good that it left us forgetting how frigid the cold was. He was very knowledgeable on the history of Chicago and its buildings.

I took the 45-minute Chicago River Architecture Cruise and it was absolutely worth it. Even though it’s shorter than the classic tour, it still delivers amazing skyline views and covers the key architectural highlights along the river. The guide was engaging and knowledgeable, giving just the right amount of history and fun facts without feeling rushed. The route is very scenic, and you get great views of iconic buildings like Marina City, the Wrigley Building, and the Tribune Tower. It’s the perfect option if you’re short on time but still want a great introduction to Chicago’s architecture and riverfront. Fast, fun, and totally worth it. Highly recommend!

Historic landmarks on your Chicago architecture cruise

Wrigley Building

The Wrigley Building stands as one of Chicago’s most recognizable early skyscrapers, completed in 1924 as the headquarters of the Wrigley Company. Its gleaming white terra cotta exterior and clock tower are inspired by Spanish Colonial architecture. It anchors the Magnificent Mile and marks the gateway to Michigan Avenue.

Tribune Tower

Tribune Tower showcases a neo-Gothic design and houses stones from global landmarks embedded. Built in 1925 after an international design competition, it reflects Chicago’s architectural ambition. Its historic fragments and ornate detailing make it a living museum of world architecture.

Marina City

Marina City redefines mixed-use urban living with its twin “corn cob” towers completed in 1964. Bertrand Goldberg designed it to combine residences, parking, and entertainment in one complex. Its circular balconies and bold form make it a standout example of mid-century modernism.

Reid Murdoch Building

The Reid Murdoch Building brings French Renaissance style to the riverfront, built in 1914 as a warehouse and office space. Its red brick walls and turrets add character to the Chicago Riverwalk. It highlights the city’s early commercial growth tied to river trade.

Jewelers Building

The Jewelers Building features a distinctive tower and once served as a secure hub for the city’s jewelry trade. Completed in 1927, it includes a car elevator that allowed jewelers to transport goods safely. Its design reflects both elegance and practical innovation.

Civic Opera House

The Civic Opera House stands as one of the largest opera venues in North America, completed in 1929. Its Art Deco design resembles a massive armchair facing the river. It represents Chicago’s commitment to culture and the performing arts.

LaSalle-Wacker Building

The LaSalle-Wacker Building, finished in 1930, showcases Art Deco design with sleek lines and geometric detailing. It sits prominently at the river’s edge and reflects the city’s transition into modern commercial architecture. Its polished façade conveys strength and simplicity.

Modern landmarks on your Chicago architecture cruise

Willis Tower

Willis Tower, formerly Sears Tower, defines Chicago’s skyline as one of the tallest buildings in the world. Completed in 1973, it introduced the bundled-tube structural system. Its Skydeck and glass ledges offer unmatched city views.

Aqua Tower

Aqua Tower stands out for its rippling concrete balconies that give a fluid, wave-like appearance. Completed in 2009 and designed by Jeanne Gang, it is home to residential, hotel, and retail spaces. Its design reduces wind loads while creating outdoor terraces.

NBC Tower

NBC Tower draws inspiration from New York’s Rockefeller Center with its Art Deco revival style. Completed in 1989, it houses media studios and offices. Its vertical lines and limestone façade give it a timeless yet modern presence.

AMA Plaza (IBM Building)

AMA Plaza, originally the IBM Building, represents minimalist modernism designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Completed in 1972, it features clean lines and black steel-and-glass exteriors. It embodies the “less is more” philosophy.

John Hancock Center

The John Hancock Center features a bold X-braced exterior that makes its structure visible and iconic. Completed in 1969, it combines offices, residences, and observation spaces. Its engineering allows for both height and stability.

Riverside Plaza

Riverside Plaza consists of a series of modern office towers designed by Mies van der Rohe. Built in phases starting in the 1950s, it emphasizes simplicity, open space, and structural clarity. It helped define modern corporate architecture along the river.
